Summer is the most exciting time of the year because of the bright sun, swimming and most importantly an increased amount of time with your family. When kids go back to school, sports, lessons, and clubs start up again, there is a startling difference in the amount of time your family spends together. Learn how to maximize the time you get together by incorporating some of these suggestions into your lives.

Family Dinners

Having a scheduled family dinner every night is one of the easiest and more effective ways to ensure that you are daily getting together as a family. Set simple standards for family dinner such as no TV, or having a minimum amount of time that kids have to stay at the table. Even if everyone is making their own meals, insist that everyone eats together at the table. A simple tip is to double recipes when you cook and freeze half of it to cut down on preparation time in the future.

Family Night

Choose a specific night each week to dedicate to doing something together as a family. Be sure to set standards that everyone in the home is aware of such as a specific start time, a no friend policy or no technology use. Letting everyone know about specific guidelines cuts down on disagreements and misunderstandings. Keep in mind that family night doesn’t have to be expensive. Going to the movies is fun; family night could also be a time to organize the basement, plant a garden, or play a board game.

Create Traditions

Creating traditions is an incredible tool in uniting a family. The best part of making traditions as a family is that you have control over what you want to do. Keep in mind that traditions don’t need to be an over the top production that stresses you out. An example of a simple tradition is what one Mom did. She would make a massive cookie to give to her child on the first day of school. The first-day cookie became such a special tradition for her child that even when they were in college, they would make their own cookie and call Mom to reminisce. The bonus with kids is if you tell them something is special they believe you. So get creative and choose simple traditions that unite your family.

The summer is ending quickly, but that doesn’t mean the closeness you feel, as a family has to be put on pause until next summer. Family dinners, family night and traditions are all ways you can continue to unify your family. Remember there is no perfect way to be a family, so there is no perfect way to incorporate this suggestion into your lifestyle. Make family dinner, family night and traditions your own. And when your children have all moved away keep those traditions alive by mailing packages to your children using BEI’s delivery services.
